5. Rocamadour - France
Perched dramatically on steep rocky cliffs, the holy city of Rocamadour presents a breathtaking sight with its layers of charming houses and quaint chapels. From the castle that crowns this remarkable structure, a sheer drop of about 150 meters leads down to the winding Alzou River below. As part of the Way of Saint James, visitors can admire the basilica of Saint-Sauveur and the crypt of Saint-Amadour, both recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, after ascending the 216 steps of the Pilgrim’s Stairs. Yet, the true treasure of this sanctuary lies within the Chapel of Miracles, one of eight chapels built against the cliffs. Here, the revered Black Madonna has been venerated for over a millennium.
Surrounding Rocamadour is the stunning Regional Nature Park of the Causses du Quercy, a magnificent tapestry of nature. This exceptional landscape features limestone plateaus, lush valleys, gorges, springs, rivers that emerge into emerald-green lakes, twisted oak forests, ancient dolmens, old mills, and charming little bridges.
Rocamadour truly feels like a village touched by the divine.
