8. Positano - Italy
Positano is a charming village and comune located along the stunning Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana) in Campania, Italy. Nestled in the hills that cascade down to the sea, Positano has a rich history, having once served as a bustling port for the Amalfi Republic during the medieval era. The village thrived in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but by the mid-nineteenth century, it faced significant challenges, with over half of its population emigrating, primarily to America.
In the early twentieth century, Positano was still a modest fishing village. However, everything changed in the 1950s when it started to draw in waves of tourists.
This shift was largely sparked by John Steinbeck’s captivating essay in Harper’s Bazaar in May 1953, where he wrote, “Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.”
