9. Terracotta Army, China
The Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang is home to over 8,000 remarkable statues of Chinese warriors and horses, an extraordinary sight buried alongside the emperor himself, defying the traditional practice of interring humans and animals.
Crafted by hand around 200 BC, each life-sized figure is intricately detailed, with no two faces being the same. Since excavations began in the 1970s, researchers have had to proceed with great care, both to protect these ancient treasures and due to a fascinating legend that claims the emperor is accompanied by a river of mercury, shining under the light.
