13 historic monuments, puzzles which are still not solved.
2. Baalbek, Lebanon
The remnants of a once-flourishing city reveal a stunning temple ensemble crafted in ancient style.
Remarkably, this is a place where the Romans lacked the technology to position stone blocks weighing up to 1,000 tons—these immense stones are found at the base. To put this in perspective, the Athenian Parthenon’s blocks are merely half the size of these Lebanese giants, while the largest stone of the Great Pyramid of Cheops tips the scales at just 90 tons.
Some credit the Egyptians with constructing this formidable foundation, if not giants of legend. Intriguingly, some speculate that this might even be the base of the fabled Tower of Babel.
